Fundraising for Roman The Great Dane

Roman, a handsome 2 year old Great Dane came into rescue and his foster mom, Brit, immediately noticed something was not right with his gait.

We suspect he has Wobblers but to diagnosis and treat can cost over $6000. Brit has taken it upon herself to raise this money and so far as raised the $1600 it will take for the diagnostic testing.

Fuzzy Update

Fuzzy is an adorable 4 month old Leonberger Mix. She fractured her tibia/fibula and her current guardians were unable to afford the medical care she required so she was transferred to BDHPI. We took her to the wonderful Dr. Dave Matthiesen who performed surgery to repair the broken bones on December 19th, 2011. He put a plate in with 6 screws and her prognosis is good to excellent! She was sent home on antibiotics for 7-8 days and pain meds for 5-7 days. Her sutures need to be removed in 2 weeks. In 5-6 weeks we'll do radiographs to assess fracture healing and implant status. She has to be in a bandage for 2.5-3 weeks post op with no running or jumping for 5 weeks. Fuzzy will require rehab to help her learn to use her leg again and build up proper muscle after not using for so long but she'll be running and playing like any normal happy puppy in no time! Many thanks to her wonderful fosters, Diana and Michael, for nursing her through her recovery!

Special Needs Stella find a home!

When you do rescue long enough, you can look at a dog and immediately guess what their "popularity" will be like with potential adopters. When I saw poor Stella, I was immediately worried she would spend a lot of time in rescue. Between her black color, older age and leg issues I worried some would pass her over and not really take a chance on her.

Well, I am here to say I was wrong! I was overjoyed when I heard that BDHPI Volunteer Alissa and her boyfriend Doug were "in the market" for a special needs Dane and Stella turned out to be exactly what they were looking for.

Alissa had even purchased Stella a beautiful new collar in hopes the adoption would work out.

Thanks to Alissa and Doug for all that you do for BDHPI! We are glad you now have a gentle giant of your own!

Maximus and Paylar pass Canine Good Citizen Test!!

Maximus and Paylar are older gentleman who are incredibly bonded to one another. They do admit to a few medical issues but we hope an adopting family will see past that and recognize what wonderful boys they are. They are wonderfully behaved and very loving. And now, thank to their incredible foster Mom Shannon, can brag that they have passed the Canine Good Citizen Test!!

And to top it all off, they are so loved here at BDHPI that their adoption fee has already been donated and will be applied to whomever the lucky family that decides to give these sweet boys a home.

Dear Friends,

Will you take 2 minutes and vote for this adopting family and their beloved Mugsy, a 9.5 yr old Fila they adopted from us? Mugsy's owner had died, leaving this old man behind. This family came to BDHPI to adopt a young dog but once they heard this story, they knew he was meant for them even tho he is an old man! The link is below.

I thought I'd send you a quick email to let you know how Mugsy is doing. Its been almost a month now and he has settled in 100%. He is doing great and we could not have imagined how wonderful he would be. He is the sweetest most gentile and caring dog we have ever met. I came across a business on facebook last year and I've been following them ever since only because they always have neat stories and pictures. A few days ago they announced a contest called "Rescue who rescued me". It is judged on a picture and a story of a dog that you have gotten from a rescue. Once the entry deadline was closed, it is open for voting from Dec 19 through Jan 20th. The winner gets to donate 10,000 meals to the rescue they chose. I entered our story and a pic of Kathy and Mugsy and even though its only been open for voting for one day, we are leading the vote count ! I didn't expect anything to come of this and did it only to participate in a fun contest. Here is the link to the contest and I thought you could pass it along to others in your organization and maybe even to others that have rescued from you. Either way we just wanted to thank you again for putting together a great organization that has been great for us and great for our big old guy Mr. Mugs.

Broccoli helps her new family through loss

Broccoli was adopted back on 11/6/11 with Janet and her father who lived with her. Just a few short days after his adoption, Janet's father passed away somewhat unexpectedly. Broccoli was a tremendous support to her while she has been coping with the loss of her dad and their family asked for donations to BDHPI in liew of flowers or any gifts at the funeral. This weekend, they showed up at one of our events in Nebraska and presented our local volunteers with a check for $400. We are overwhelmed with their generosity and so happy that Broccoli is showing them what a gentle giant is all about and assisting with the healing process!

Here is a note from Janet:

We had such a great time and look forward to coming to more events and getting involved. My Dad would be so pleased that the money will be used to help one of the gentle giants have a better life. He so loved Brocolli and the mission of your rescue. Thank you so much for all your help in making this wonderful gift happen!

Home for the Holidays

It is always interesting to us here at BDHPI how owner surrender dramatically increase during the holiday season. We cant even begin to understand when the sentence starts with "How soon can you take our Mastiff? We are having family in town for Christmas!"

While we all agree that family probably doesn't deserve their wonderful Mastiff, it puts BDHPI in a bind. We have a long wait list as it, and it is almost unbearable during the Holidays. Sadly, we have to turn away dogs.

The way to help us with this problem is to adopt! Don't put it off until the Holidays are over. I personally know Danes and Mastiffs are great at supervising the opening presents on Christmas morning, and if you ask Lisa Cecchini our Chief Admin Officer she will tell you little Pyr mixes are great at it too (they will even take them into the yard for you!)

Won't you bring home a gentle giant for the holidays?

Heroes Dance Performance

Brenda O’Brien of Starstruck Academy of Dance in Englewood, CO had a donation drive for BDHPI on Sunday, December 3rd. She choreographed a performance for the holidays about "Heroes" with the intention of inspiring her dancers and their families to do what they can for others. As part of her show, she lead a drive to collect things like leashes, collars, blankets, stuffed animals, heavy duty dog toys and other such items that our rescue might need to help out the foster families. Brenda invited a representative of the rescue to attend as well.

Darlene and I were treated to an amazingly beautiful performance. All age groups participated and did a tremendous job. The choreography was stunning and the dancers nothing short of spectacular.

The dancers and their families made us lovely cards to thank us for the rescue work we do every day. Their photos and notes were very touching. We were astonished to see the stack of items donated for our foster dogs. We filled my Subaru from the front seat all the way to the back!

Located in Denver's City Park, the Zoo's main entrance is on 23rd Avenue between Colorado Boulevard and York Street.

We booked the party on one of the few "private nights" at the zoo which means we will not be fighting the crowds like we did last year!

We will have a delicious multi-course catered meal and an all you can drink bar for $38.50 per person.

The zoo hosts a wonderful holiday attraction called "Zoo Lights" and you will also be able to walk around and see their beautiful display before or after dinner!

In our usual fashion, awards will be given to recognize some of our volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. We will also have a special slide show and presentation to summarize all we have accomplished in 2011 together as a team! We hope you will join us for this special night in your honor!

RIP Morgan

On Friday we lost the most amazing, beautiful soul we have ever known. Morgan fought a long, hard battle but ultimately Lymphoma took her far too soon. Morgan has been through so much in the short time we've had her; at the end of May she had acl surgery and two weeks later we found out she had Lymphoma. We couldn't bear the thought of losing her so soon and she started chemo immediately. Through all the treatments she still had such an amazing personality and spirit even though we knew she wasn't feeling her best.

Morgan has made such an amazing impact on us and taught us a way to love that we never knew possible. She was a great ambassador for big dogs, she loved everyone and was so sweet to anyone she met. We were told less than two weeks ago that the cancer had become extremely aggressive, and although the last two weeks have been the hardest time of my life I am incredibly thankful for the times we had with her; her nibbling that destroyed comforters and pillows, how she would scoot across the yard on her back to grab a stick or to come to you for a belly rub, and even how on a walk if she was done walking, we were done until she was ready so we'd just sit in front of someones house, even if it was the house next door, until she was feeling up to walking again. I am so incredibly thankful that Morgan's vet saw how special she was and came to our home to help her pass to avoid her having to go through anymore stress, we were together as a family in the bed we created on the floor where we have slept for the last week.

Because of the love of Morgan and the impact she's made, we are in the process of starting a non-profit organization that assists families in our area with medical bills for their pets; I could never imagine someone having their dog diagnosed with Lymphoma, having a broken leg, or being sick and them not having the option to do all that is possible. And although we were only able to spend a little over one year with her, which was not nearly long enough, we are thankful for BDHP, for all you do, and most of all for helping Morgan so she could find us.

We have so many people wanting to become Volunteers (YEAH!) that we can't quite keep up!

We need your help! The time commitment would be 1 hour every 1-2 weeks! Simple!

We need:

1. Volunteer Only App- After going thru training, you will call new Volunteers, welcome them and talk to them about BDHPI. Simple as pie!

2. Foster App- After going thru training, you will call the applicant to discuss with them the BDHPI foster program. You will evaluate the family and see if they are a good match for BDHPI!

Along with $80 worth of donations in a few days of the Tastefully Simple fundraiser, we receieved a very generous and unexpected $200 donation at the Nebraska Dog N Jog event this week! For this sweet face of Neshobe, on his way home after 20 days of being lost in the woods, you all truely stepped up and impressed the heck out of the Officers at BDHPI.

People came from all over. Some of you know Neshobe, some of you did not. Some hiked for hours, some for days, some for weeks now. Some spent the night, some rose at dusk to drive the hour from Denver to get there, some saw bears, some saw mountain lions and one even fought off a pack of aggressive Mastiffs (ironic, huh?)

Weight has been lost, shoes have been worn down, tears have been shed, prayers have been sent up & sleep has been lost.

But because of this sweet old face, you all did it! And, I am willing to bet you would all do it again.

We cannot thank you enough for all that you have done, no effort was too small.

We are so proud to be working with you all!

Neshobe Update, 9.11

Marissa, Neshobe's foster Mom had ended her search last night and headed back to the house where he was lost from to gather her things. Once there, she turned to to look out a window and saw Shobe staring back at her! HE HAD FOLLOWED HER BACK!

As Marissa opened the door, Shobe spooked and ran off.

We are beyond thrilled that he followed his Mom and now it is just playing the patience game (not that we haven't been already!)

We are asking all searching for Shobe to stop. We are hopeful he will feel more comfortable without the commotion of strangers.

We are so incredibly thankful for all of the people who came to help! I heard of a couple who drove down from Cheyenne, WY to help! AMAZING!

With each coming day he shows more and more interest in being "found". Let's pray he will safe and sound by Monday!

Neshobe Update, 9.9

Neshobe has been seen twice today! First by a woman driving to work. She said he would pop into the middle of the road, approach her car, but run away when she would exit the car! We are encouraged that he is showing interest.

The last sight was within the last hour (It is 7pm MST now!). Marissa, foster mom extraordinaire, is now in hot pursuit! I just spoke with Trenny who is going to finish feeding her children and than head back up with her hounds.

We are all amazed that this senior boy has escaped the bears and mountain lions that he is sharing his space with! He is one tough boy!

RIP Sadie The Saint

We had the great misfortune to lose our sweet friend and foster companion, Sadie the St. Bernard, quite suddenly to bloat last week. Sadie came to us in June from a shelter in South Dakota, where she was picked up as a stray (which completely boggles our minds...how could someone not be missing this sweet girl?) She was an elegant supermodel of a dog, a tall, tricolor flat-coated St. Bernard beauty with the sweetest, happy-go-lucky disposition I think we've ever met. She loved to engage in active conversations with me (Sandy), and was my constant companion since I'm at home a lot. She loved to prance around, and she and her foster brother Diesel were madly in love with each other, and shared lots of squirrel chasing in our back yard. Our son Larry was also very close with her...he loved to play with her and take her for walks. Needless to say, her loss has brought us all great sadness.

When we took her out in public, everyone (and I mean everyone) gravitated toward her...she was remarkably beautiful, and so friendly and approachable! Even at the Deer Creek Animal Hospital, they remarked on how lovable she was. Sadie came to us with a pretty bad case of entropion in both eyes, and crazy amounts of eye mucus. Dr. Cox and I worked together on bilateral entropion surgery, and then with eye drops to get this issue under control, and she was doing so much better! Gives new meaning to the term "doggone it"! Such an incredible tragedy that this girl left us at such a young, vital age, but we feel so lucky that we got to be her forever family for her last few months. We loved her deeply, and feel comforted knowing that she felt loved in her last days and last hours.

Hello All~ We are still in search of Neshobe, it is a round the clock effort. We are very confident he is still alive. We need bodies...at this point we are asking to NOT bring your dogs up...we feel like he is getting spooked...if he is not found today, we will be organizing a large search party for later this week.

Time is of the essence at this point, he is a pain medicated dog and desperately needs our help!

Neshobe Update- Sunday, Sept 4th

Neshobe has not been found but he is still alive and in the area. There we no signs of Neshobe during the daytime hours yesterday – THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CAME OUT!!! Here is a picture of Lucky, one of Trenny's search and rescue dogs taking a break!

Last NIGHT the search dog team indicated hard on the ORANGE area on the attached revised map again. They were circling in that area and saw TONS of Neshobe prints additionally they heard him alert barking for several minutes. They passed the PURPLE Dot on the map - a few minutes later they doubled-back and there was a FRESH Neshobe poop! This is the same location where we found his urine the night before, so it seems he is eliminating in the same spot…we’ve placed his dog bed there in hopes that the familiar scent will draw him in and keep him in this location. It seems like Neshobe is following the night search team and watching them, but he is not showing himself. He is very elusive. So when you are out there please keep your eyes peeled at all times, Neshobe may be watching you JThe search dog team last night heard him but could not see him. In fear of scaring him off further, while he was trying to come up and bed down, they decided to leave the location to allow him to settle in for the night.

Seems he is traveling up and down Pactolous Lake Rd moving back and forth from the United Power Building (when you first turn off of highway 72 onto South Beaver). He is traveling on the road and in the space between the road and the river. This river is blocked with some fencing and barb wire in places – there is a private fly fishing club there (huge building going up) The river is patrolled 24x7 by guards and they know about Neshobe and are looking for him too.

AGAIN - It is also highly likely he is traveling up and down Pactolus Lake Road– if you like you can simply drive/walk up and down slowly looking for him OR just park and watch - we have to see him at some point. We also need someone to stand near the stop sign (when you first turn off of highway 72) to talk with people and hand out flyers. There will be tons of visitors in that area today and tomorrow and want to make sure they know about Neshobe.

In an effort to not scare Neshobe further, it is imperative that anyone searching for Neshobe have calm energy.

9/2 Update – Thank you to all the dogs and their humans who searched today

We did not find Neshobe today, but we found very fresh pee and fresh tracks and heard him bark...Marissa was positive. We also think we know where he has been sleeping, although he did not go there tonight. Marissa and I are still up here and are going to search at sunrise with Ava and Asher. We covered lots of territory, however we did not hear any barking. His foot prints are scattered throughout the area.

WE NEED LOTS OF HELP SATURDAY! Please come up and help. He is within a mile of us.

You can check in at Kristine's and then come find us down on Pactolus Rd. and south beaver creek Rd junction. Team – we truly need your help to bring Neshobe home. We need as many volunteers as possible searching around the clock through the holiday weekend, time is of the essence. We are planning to have a fairly large search party scheduled for Saturday night into Sunday morning – please join us! If you can help ANY TIME this weekend, even if it is for an hour or so please let me know.

We believe he is sunning himself and snoozing during much of the daytime hours, so the best time to see or hear him is in the evening and/or early morning between (5am – 7am). However we still need eyes and ears out during the day as well (he was heard barking mid-day earlier in the week).

He is still alive and still here. Please come help bring him home. You and your dogs safety is key. · Please bring food, water, flashlights/headlamps, layers of clothing, a leash (in case you find our mystery man) and some hot dogs or cheese. ·

Please leave a note on your car or at the house and/or call/text/email Marissa or Kristine if you come in/out of the area.· Remember there is only AT&T cell service up there and spotty Verizon coverage. Two way radios, whistles and car horns are great tools as well

Neshobe is Missing!

Neshobe the Senior Great Dane has been missing since August 25th! Ccan you help by joining our search party?

Signs have been posted. Police have been notified as well as all the neighbors. We put out an amber missing pet alert to about 500 locals. He is posted as missing on Petfinder, Pet Harbor and a couple other sites. There are campers up there and they know he is missing and are looking for him.

Team – we truly need your help to bring Neshobe home. We need as many volunteers as possible searching around the clock through the holiday weekend, time is of the essence. We are planning to have a fairly large search party scheduled for Saturday night into Sunday morning – please join us! If you can help ANY TIME this weekend, even if it is for an hour or so please let me know. About the area he is in:

Home Address: 124 Blue Flag Lane, Blackhawk, CO (closer to Pinecliffe than Blackhawk)

Directions are fairly easy. Map attached.
Get to Coal Creek Canyon (72) and go up past Wonder Vu and down again -

You go through Pinecliffe over RR tracks. At about the 15 mile mark (from when you turn onto 72 from 93) you will turn LEFT onto S Beaver Creek Rd.

Go over the RR tracks again and take the SECOND LEFT onto Emory (sign kind of hidden) just past a group of mailboxed.

Go straight up Emory and at the top turn left onto Blue Flag to get to Kristines house (second house on left)
OR keep going straight for about 1/4 of a mile and turn left at the big dirt pile drive in about 1/4 mile (this is the area where Neshobe was last seen).

If you have AT&T your cell will work up there but if not, it won't. It is a rather remote area with homes every 1-2 miles. 4 wheel drive recommended. There are some creeks up there and puddles of rain water. Neshobe seems to frequent the roads during the day and hunker down at night.

NE Weenie Roast! Event Update

The next NE event is scheduled for Sunday, September 18 from Noon - 5:00 pm. BDHP will be appearing live at the Road Gems Last Fling till Spring Car/Craft Show in West Point, NE. Admission is free and includes the following: Live entertainment, crafts, food, drink, tailgate parties and a poker run cruise. The event covers 10 blocks of the downtown streets of West Point, NE. We will be selling our homemade dog tugs and dog treats. Attendance is huge at this event -- 10,000 - 15,000 people participate every year.

Dogs and Storks

In less than 8 weeks, my husband and I will be welcoming our very first 2 legged baby into our home. I had the revelation last week that I am the first of us Officers to have a baby and while we in "theory" know how to counsel our adopting families, I am really the first one of us to live it! I am also finding lots to worry about and aside from the pain of labor, I am most worried about the dogs.

Will the baby have allegories? Than what?

Will the dogs welcome the baby?

Will they feel abandoned?

Do I keep them out of the baby's room? Or do I let them come in?

How many arguments are on the horizon with extended family about me letting my dogs smell/lick/nudge the baby?

I've heard what you all have...bring home the baby's hat or blanket from the hospital to let them smell it. I started thinking a few weeks ago about what the real point of it is? What's the difference between letting the dogs smell the hat the day before I come home or the day I come home? I've asked a few behaviorists who say it's not a bad idea, but don't really have a concrete answer as to why.

In my conversation with my favorite behaviorists, I've asked their opinions and have been given these two great websites:

I am not oblivious to the fact that ALL of our lives are about to change- human and dogs. I am also not oblivious to the fact that my priority will become the baby, but never do I want any of our pups to feel unwanted or unloved. Nor do I ever want to give them the opportunity to "fail" when it comes to Baby Dew!

This weekend I was chatting with Pat Blocker of Peaceful Paws about our brave (not!) Mastiff and she suggested we set up the swing so he can get used to the noise and motion before baby comes- which I thought was a great idea! Knowing Deacon, the swing will be a VERY scary addition of our decor!

Our Mastiff has already helped himself to a few soft and sweet plush baby toys he has found in the nursery and now we go out of our way to be sure the door is shut. I had to laugh out loud today when I heard banging and turned to see him head butting the door to open it. Apparently he is not done shopping yet!

I would encouage everyone to check out these links while preparing for Baby. Setting up your dog for success is #1!

Update on Samson- Adopted in 12/10

I really want to thank Samson's original family for loving him enough to find a rescue site for him when they knew he wouldn't work out in their home. They could have just let him live in the back yard or given him to the animal shelter, but they didn't. They brought him to you and you brought him to me. (Truth is, I think that he was supposed to be with me at the end of his life, but that's my hippie way of looking at the world.)

He was clearly loved at his previous home and he is such a joy. He's affectionate, confident, well behaved, eager to please, independent and sweet - he's really such an amazing balance. Everyone - I mean everyone - that meets him LOVES him. I go to the coffee house and I end up trading phone numbers with couples who want "play dates" with Sam and their dogs. He has a nick-name at the dog park ("the Sheriff", because he does not stand for fighting when he is there - he'll break it up - not kidding)! He is so well-balanced that when I go to New York for a few days and leave him with friends he is playing with their kids, he is jumping around, eating, sleeping, happy... but when I come through the door he can't get close enough to me and ends up knocking me over with his big adorable snuggle. Fifteen minutes later he is lying on the floor totally chilled.

I'm not sure how I could love him more. I just want them to know that he's well and he's happy. I think he'd be more happy with kids and other dogs around, but I do as much as I can to keep him socialized. He goes to work with me every day where there are 2 other dogs that he plays with, he goes to the dog park a few times a week, he gets walked 3 times a day and he goes to the coffee house with me to meet peeps and just get out of the house. He and I play tag and chase and he gets lots of belly rubs.

I just wanted to share that, because the more his fantastic personality comes out, the more I think they must miss him soooo much, and I want them to know they did the right thing and even though I'm sure he would have rather stay with them, he's happy and loved.

Zeus the Lion

Lindsay asked if I could give Zeus a ride to a vet appointment this morning and being 7 months pregnant and not knowing if he would jump into our Durango, I dragged my hubby from the warmth of our bed to give me a hand....just incase.

I strolled into The Big Backyard to pick up my guest and literally laughed out loud when they brought him up to me, I was greeted by this Lion!

We strolled out to the car, where he promptly jumped into the car with no assistance (and I did catch the eye roll of my husband who I am sure was thrilled he had gotten up early to watch Zeus effortlessly jump into the car!)

As we drove, he kissed our ears and laid his head on mine. We were 5 minutes into our drive when I declared I loved Zeus and most definitely believed we should foster him....yet another eye roll from Hubby.

When it came time for me to leave him at the vet, Zeus got very nervous and clingy. Which in my world, means even more he should come home with us. I wasn't even done putting back on my seat belt before my husband said the following, " I know where you are heading and before you even start let me say that I think he is a great dog. He is very cute and I love his crazy hair and I think he will make some lucky family VERY happy, BUT that family will not be us!"

So with that in mind, I am turning to you all to find space in your hearts and home for Zeus the Lion and for any of the other adorable dogs we have in rescue! BTW, have you noticed how many Great Pyr's we have right now? They are all waiting for YOU!

Channel 7 Every Day Hero Award!

Our President/CEO, Lindsay Condon, was honored this morning in a surprise ceremony where she was presented with the Denver Channel 7 "Every Day Hero" award!

With giant dogs in tow, we descended upon her work place and the "mandatory" meeting her boss had set up. She was shocked and surprised to say the least!

From there, we headed to a nearby park for interviews to brag about our fearless leader and all the great work she does!!

Update on Lulu the Frenchie

I wanted to write to let you know how Lulu-girl is doing.

She is WONDERFUL!! She has blended right into our family with no problems. She doesn’t seem to mind all the noise and welcomed all my family over on Saturday when they came to see her. There were 8 adults, 2 toddlers and 2 babies and she was great.

She has enjoyed her walks and only pulls really bad when the rabbits taunt her. She is the second mama already – “supervising” all feedings, diaper changes, baths and playtime. The storms last night made her a little nervous, but she just cuddled in even closer which I didn’t think was possible since she likes to lay on you. J She also seemed nervous when we were going to crate her so we just left her out and found her snoring in our bed when we came home. I honestly can’t imagine why anyone would let this special girl go. It breaks my heart. I know our Hanky is smiling down from Heaven that we have another true friend in our home to take care of us.

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to adopt Lulu. I like to think that she found us. J I’ve attached a few pics of her.

Dawson (adopted in 2008) update

In 2008 The Ballas Family adopted Prince (now known as Dawson). Over the years this great family has stayed in touch with BDHPI and Mom Karena helps BDHPI out by writing all of our Thank You notes!

This week, the Ballas Family is on vacation and Mr Dawson has come to stay BDHPI VP, Bree and her husband Brian. It is so awesome to see such a well adjusted and loved rescue dog years later!

Dawson is about as beautiful as they come and clearly thriving in his forever home!

As VP/COO of BDHPI I've sadly said goodbye to many dogs that I've loved over the years, but nothing could have prepared me the loss of my own rescue boy. Two weeks ago, Brian and I said goodbye to our best buddy, Zachey Poo Dew.

Zach came to me in 2006 as a foster, and was only here 3 days before I knew he was here to stay.Zach was mature, calm, kind, sweet and so lazy. What I didn't know was that Zach was pretty sick, and after an initial 2 week battle with a bad case of kennel cough, I realize I had adopted a young, crazy, jumping, bucking bronco Great Dane. My first clue was when I came home to find he had eaten every candle, cookbook and pillow he could find. He even pulled all the blankets and sheets off my bed to make his own in the family room

The next morning, began my new life with my young boy. I had to get up 20 minutes early to wrestle him down the hallway into a crate. To date, in over 175 dogs through my doors, he was the WORST to teach how to walk on a Gentle Leader. He was also the worst jumper- I cannot tell how you many times that first summer he would jump on my back, dragging those talon nails down my back taking my skirt with it! Thank goodness for 6 ft privacy fences!

After 6 months of hard work and patience, Zach turned a corner and became the absolute best dog ever. He attended countless rescue events, was a wonderful foster brother and his love encouraged me to seek higher positions within the rescue to help others find their perfect match.

Zach saw me through a lot as a single girl...he helped mend a few broken hearts, he helped build my home, the loss of a job ,the diagnosis of a sick parent....he was also there to be part of the new family that was created when I met Brian. It took him a month or so to welcome Brian into our home, but in the last years he often chose Brian's chest over mine to lay on when it came time to snuggle. Zachey taught Brian about the love of a rescue dog and is the sole reason Brian accepts my dedication to rescue.

As time went on Zachey developed many medical issues and Brian and I did everything we could to keep him comfortable over the last two years. We were devastated when Dr Rob discovered he had Osteosarcoma. Brian and I made the heartwrenching decisions to say goodbye.

8 days after we lost Zach, we lost my Dad to a fast 8 week battle with Cancer. My young nephews have been struggling to make sense of the loss of my Dad and my 7 yr old nephew Cooper came to me and told me that he thought God needed Zachey so Grandpa would know someone when he got to Heaven. I think he was right!

Zachey was very loved by many BDHPI Volunteers and I know he loved you all so much- especially Auntie Lindsay and Aunt Suz! Brian and I also cannot thank Dr Rob Landry enough for his support of the years. He was on the receiving ends of panic filled calls and always, and I mean always, made time for us! Also to Dr Winton, our very own BDHPI CMO, who cared for him with such love during his latest medical scare in April.

Zach was one in a million and taught me more about rescue than could ever be learned from any human. We will miss Z.P.D the rest of our lives.

Yappy Hour! Friday, June 3rd!!!!!!

What: City Bark (a Doggie Day Care) and Duo Dogs (Duo Marketing & PR’s Doggie Social Group) host the June Yappy Hour Fundraiser. This is the only joint canine and human party in town. Dogs and their owners will come together for fun and to raise money to benefit two local dog rescues: Safe Harbor Lab Rescue and Big Dogs Huge Paws. Beer and hot dogs will be provided and City Bark's dog park and swimming pool will be open for dogs to enjoy.

Where: City Bark Denver, 2000 W. 8th Ave., in Denver

When: Friday, June 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m

Why: Where else can you meet other dog lovers, grab a beer, and bring your dog while raising money to save dogs in need of forever homes?

Lily Lou Dew

Brian and I are so deeply sad to let you know that we said goodbye to Lilly, the 6 yr old OEM, who came into our home in December as a permanent foster. As with many things rescue, she was meant to be mine even before I knew it! She had gone up on the website a few weeks prior and I immediately was drawn to her picture. When I got an email from Lindsay saying she had been diagnosed with severe Spondlyosis and asked if we might consider taking her in, I knew it was meant to be.

Lily came into our home as a terrified, growly, snarly, snappy girl. We immediately bonded but it took some time, in fact a few months, before she truly trusted Brian. It was very clear she had been mistreated at the hands of man. Brian was so patient with her and respected her boundaries. He let Lily determine the extent of their relationship and I can’t tell how happy it has made me the last two months to see her actively seek him out for belly rubs or playtime.

Those that know me know that I love the seniors and really love the scrappy old ladies. You only had to look at my Lou Lou for a second to know she had lived a hard life. It made me love her even more. It’s been a long time since I’ve had such a devoted dog by my side and her absence is pounding through the walls of our house.

Lou and her crazy personality made us laugh everyday…her impatience at meal time, her temper tantrums she would throw if we didn’t let her out quick enough after meal time, the way this old broken lady still loved her flea squeaky toy, the snoring, the way she would come in the dog door on her own but not go out and the way she would go belly up for a tummy rub if your hand even appeared to be moving in the direction of her belly.

Lily passed away peacefully our home yesterday with the assistance of Dr. Jason. She enjoyed 3 McDonald’s hamburgers, a great belly rub and snored up until her last breath.

As always, I feel incredibly blessed to be part of an organization like BDHPI that believes that Seniors and Special Need dogs are as deserving of a home as the next dog. Lily, along with the other Dew dogs that went before her, are the reason why we do what we do. The sadness we feel today is completely worth it for the love she gave to our family.

"Every Big Dogs Deserves A Chance"...is the motto that was applied to BDHPI when we first began in 2008. It makes me so incredibly proud that to this day we continue to stand by our words.

Meet Tulip, a 3 month old OEM. Tulip only has 1 eye and has a deformed front foot. To many, she would be considered "unadoptable". But not to us! To us she deserves a chance. To us she deserves to be loved, imperfections at all. Sure, she is going to need a special family who is dedicated to her orthopedic needs, but why shouldn't we give her a chance?

And, than there is Maurice. A sweet baby boy who was accidentally stepped on by his mom. The injury caused paralysis in his hind end, but we are thrilled to say he is regaining use of his legs as we speak. His breeder considered him "not worth selling" and was ok with the risk of euthanasia at a local shelter. Maurice is going to seen by a wonderful BDHPI vet and we will have a plan of action for this sweet boy in no time.

These two cases will most definitely eat up a lot of our funds, but we are ok with that. We will do what we need to do to make sure these two babies are safe and healthy. We will be their advocates until they have new families of their own.

We are sharing a booth with another rescue for the event, and we need BDHPI volunteers and supporters to help out at the booth (talking about BDHPI with those who stop by) and to bring adoptable dogs (we can even try to find you a foster if you don't have one and want to bring one!). We need your help

The good news is there is tremendous interest in BDHPI and adopting from our organization. We get over 100 applications a month.

The bad news is that with over 100 applications a month we need a continuous group of volunteers who can help process them.

It can all be done from the internet and phone, it is great for Volunteers who are not able to be in direct contact with the dogs.

To be a part of our Application Committee:

1. Attend a 1 hour training session
2. Be responsible, responsive & people friendly
3. Be willing to become educated on BDHPI policies & procedures
4. Be willing to read through the BDHPI website and become educated on Nutrition & Training philosophies
4. Be willing to call references & conduct the applicant phone interview

This is just a friendly reminder to please scroll ALL THE WAY to the bottom of our adoptable page. There are so many fabulous dogs down there. Some of us have been here since last summer. We think it's pretty darn unfair.

It hurts our feelings that we keep getting skipped over. Would it hurt to consider a mature fellow like Clifford? Or maybe a gal like Briar Rose who loves her people so much she just doesn't like to share with other dogs? Why with a face like she has, would Gertrude keep getting passed by? And, who doesn't love a big brindle female who promises to love you with her huge heart like Molly?

Update on Bear ( formerly known as Moses)

My puppy that we adopted from BDHP last spring is now 1 year old. He was Moses (now Bear) and is one of the St. Bernard/Lab mix puppies.

Bear is a wonderful dog. He's good natured, easy going, well behaved and loves to play (he also digs in the yard-- but we're working on stopping that!)

BDHPI lost one of our favorites this week. Here is a note from Kirstin, a BDHPI Volunteer and Ginny's Mom. Get out the tissues!

Today the world lost a beautiful soul. Ginny died suddenly from heart failure this morning. She was rushed to the emergency vet where they were able to restart her heart but it was too weak to keep going. The vet assured me that she felt no pain and had no signs of illness. There was nothing anyone could have done to save her.

Ginny was my second foster ever, but she was always mine. She came into my life two years ago, abused and neglected, afraid of everything. She hid in my bathroom for months, submissively peeing even just when spoken to. She was terrified of people, I didn't blame her. She spent the first three years of her life in a puppy mill, mass producing puppies in a cage with no real human interaction, no love, no knowledge that there was a life outside of this. Slowly she would inch out of the bathroom, further and further down the hall and into the house as she gained trust.

The first sign of her breaking out of her shell was when I fostered Lexi, a Great Dane who soon had ten puppies after coming to live with me. They became pals and shared responsibilities in raising the puppies. Ginny would get in the pen and help clean the pups while Lexi took a break, my dynamic mama dog duo.

Watching her gain confidence and learning how to be a real dog really struck a chord with me. She inspired me to change my life. She made me want to be an advocate, dedicating myself to spending the rest of my days helping animals. I left everything I knew and moved to Colorado to attend vet tech. school so I could fulfill that need, and help others like her. It was the most difficult thing I have done thus far in my life, but at least I had her by my side on this journey. I have never felt love for an animal as I do for her. She was the most loyal companion I have ever had. Even off leash at the dog park, she was rarely more than a few steps behind me. She made me smile even on the lousiest of days, greeting me always with her kind eyes, wagging tail and the softest ears you could imagine.

She died as she lived, by my side, on her bed next to mine. I only wish we could have taken one more walk or trip to the dog park or even just snuggled one more time on the couch. Though she may not have had the strongest heart, it was the certainly the biggest and now there is a hole in mine. Even though I couldn't save her today, we spent the past two years saving each other and I have plenty of wonderful pictures and memories to remind me of that. I can't help but think that she was taken from me too soon, I suppose someone else must need her more than I do, I just hope they know how wonderful she is and that she likes to be scratched right above her tail.

I will keep her with me always, my loyal baby girl who changed my life and gave me a purpose.

Update on Lily the Permanent Foster

Upon being diagnosed with severe Spondylosis, Lily the OEM came to our family in December 2010 as a permanent foster. She came in very fearful, timid and not a huge fan of men. She was afraid of the dog food bowls and dog beds (which, as you can see in the above picture, she has overcome!)

Almost 4 months later she has blossomed. She adores our other dogs and is my faithful companion. She loves to play with plush toys and has one with her most times of the day. She is definitely a "woman's dog", but is finally to the place where she trusts my husband as well.

She will always have a fearful side to her and we have to be careful with her and strangers, but she is a true joy to our family. She is so grumpy, grouchy and set in her ways. She makes us laugh every day with her crazy antics. Her poor wrinkles cover part of her eyes, so when we talk to her she throws her head back to look at us and that gives us a laugh every single day.

She has become such a loving dog who would literally protect me to her last breath. The house behind us is adding on a floor and nothing makes her angrier than if one of the workmen dare to even say hi to me :)

Lily Lou Lou has brought so much to our lives and I know we have to hers as well. I can't encourage people enough to consider taking in a permanent foster. Yes, you do so knowing the end is coming, but the joy outweighs any sadness. To know we have made a significant difference in a life brings deep satisfaction.

The Adjustment Period

If you foster or adopt from us, "The Adjustment Period" is a phrase you will hear over and over again. We drive it home.

If an adoption is going to fail, it is typically during the adjustment period so we do everything we can to educate or families about what to expect and what not to expect.

**Set your expectations low. People often set higher standards for a new dog than they do for their human counterparts.

**Your new dog will not know where the dog door is. He will not understand you only want him to go potty "on this side" of the yard unless you diligently works with him for weeks.

**Your new dog will not know his new name for a while.

**Do not let your new dog off leash. Would you go to an open field and let your child loose?

**Do not expect your new dog to know how to walk up and down stairs the first week you bring them home. They may not have ever seen them before. It is up to the human to patiently teach them.

**Your dog and your new dog may not become best friends over night. That's ok. Do you love everyone you meet right away?

**Your dog and your new dog may squabble over toys, affection and food. It's up to us humans to anticipate this and set up an environment for success.

**Your dog and new dog may have a fight. But they typically forgive and forget quickly..I wish as many humans did this.

**Don't expect your dog to understand the first night that they are not allowed on the couch or bed. That is something you have to teach them. Gently lure them off the couch with yummy treats. NEVER pull a collar. If you find yourself with a stubborn kiddo, gently leash and lead them off the couch/bed.

**Give your new dog time to adjust with just your immediate family for the first few days. As hard as it is not to show off your new pride and joy, don't bring the neighborhood over to meet him. Let him rest, relax and bond.

**Set realistic expectations for yourself. It is a lot to bring a new dog into your home. It may take a little bit to get used to the big clumsy boy who walks one inch behind you at all times. It make take a while to remember to put that bread away in a taller cabinet. It may take a while to get used to finding slobber on your ceiling in rooms you swear the dog has never entered!

**When frustrated, take a deep breath. Be patient. Be kind.

**Before threatening to return a dog to rescue, ask yourself "Have I given this new dog a change to succeed? I know what this dog has been through, am I setting realistic expectations? Have I tried, and I mean really tried?"

BDHPI is here to help any adopting family through any issue, no matter how big or small.

Updates on a few BDHPI Alums

Remember Monty who was adopted at 10 years young! Here he is still livin' the life with his wonderful parents!!!

Well we took Monty and Lexi to the dog park last Saturday. Monty had a blast. He took off RUNNING…it was amazing. We were so happy to see him running, it just lifted our hearts. He loped a couple times after that but mostly sniffed around and wanted everyone to pet him. He loves people. He is such a great dog…we just love him.

Remember Emmitt the Great Dane Puppy, his new name is Moose and now he is all grown up. Here he is watching Marmaduke!

TKO/BDHPI Therapy Dog Visit!

BDHPI and TKO had our first joint visit to Rocky Mountain Children's Hospital this week!

Seattle Seahawk Offensive Lineman Tyler Polumbus, Suzy Herbison, Storm the Bernese Mountain Dog, Lindsay Condon & Duke the Great Dane all went over to Rocky Mountain Children's Hospital yesterday for our very first TKO/BDHPI Therapy Dog Visit! We had a great time cheering up kids who ranged in age from 2 years old to 16 years old. They were there undergoing chemo, surgery, suffering from kidney failure, etc. It was very fun to see their faces light up when the dogs came into the room and it provided some joy for their parents who were under a great deal of stress as well! Tyler also signed autographed photos which was a fun present to leave behind.

We look forward to future visits!

Years ago Bree & Lindsay met a wonderful couple, Susan and Michael, who have a special place in their hearts for Great Danes. They also like to take on the special need cases and seniors, which makes us love them even more! They will do anything for their dogs and give them wonderful lives for how ever much time they have left.

When their lost one of their special needs Danes, Gracie, they came to BDHPI looking for a senior and found Zada. We were so thrilled when they chose Zada and we knew she would be in wonderful hands with them.

This weekend they shared this darling picture of Zada with us and also shared the sad news that she has been diagnosed with Cancer. We know they will give her great care and tell us that Zada is doing great so far!

We pray Zada puts up a great fight against this ugly disease and continues to bring Susan and Michael the joy that we know she does!

TKO's Mission

Through Tyler’s Kids Outreach (TKO), Tyler and Liz Polumbus strive to enrich the lives of children through family, faith and personal growth. Tyler is a homegrown success story of Denver, so starting his program here is that much more meaningful to him. From their own upbringing, both Liz and Tyler fully appreciate the importance of all three elements – family, faith and personal growth - in the healthy development of children. Moreover, Tyler realizes that through his program the children will enrich their lives as much as they will theirs. He sums it up best when he says, “’Growing Strong Together’ fits our program because this will be a growing process for everyone involved – Liz, the kids and I! We are very excited about TKO!

Entering his third year in the NFL and having a strong foundation of community work from working with the Broncos Community Relations department, Tyler feels ready to take the next step by starting his own program. To do so, he and Liz have created Tyler’s Kids Outreach (TKO, a program under the 501 (c)(3) umbrella of Athletes for Education which is a San Diego-based non-profit foundation. They have big plans for the first year of their program and for years to come. So watch out Denver…here comes TKO! We’re going to Knock you Out in 2011!

Big Dogs Huge Paws Mission

Big Dogs Huge Paws is a 501c3, non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming giant breed dogs in need. We work primarily with Great Danes, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, Mastiffs (All Types), Irish Wolfhounds, and Scottish Deerhounds and our core philosophy is that “Every BIG dog deserves a chance!”

Community outreach and educating society about the breeds that we work with and the importance of rescue are both top priorities for our organization. One of our long-term goals has always been to start a therapy program to use our gentle giants to provide affection and comfort to people in hospitals, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and people with learning difficulties. Many of the giant breeds that we work with tend to be great candidates for therapy work which requires a dog who is friendly, patient, confident, gentle and at ease in all situations.

How Can TKO and BDHPI Work Together?
Children, especially those who are abused or neglected, are able to communicate with animals. A pet offers a safe place for a child with emotional problems. They give unconditional love, providing a security blanket. A dog can be the bond that glues a family together when upheaval, such as moving, death or divorce, or illness occurs. Often, an animal can reach a child beyond an adult's touch.

Mary Kelly, a child-life specialist at Children's Hospital in Oakland, CA (USA), coordinates pet therapy sessions twice a month and is amazed at the incredible connections that occur. "We've had very dramatic visits where a dog brought a child who has not spoken for months out of depression," she states. "Most kids can relate to animals, so seeing and touching the pets brings them a sense of normalcy."

*TKO and BDHPI share a common goal which is to help children grow and we believe that our organizations can make an even greater impact on the lives of children together!

Update on Mont the DDB

Mont and Keela make a great pair. She is bossy and likes to have all the attention. He is laid back but will let us know when he wants something. He makes a cute little grunting sound and will give a play bow when he wants to go outside. When they play together Monty will turn circles like a bucking bronco and push her away with his back end.

He has completed his 1st obedience course at Petco and Dennis reports he is a chic magnet! He is true to his breed in that he takes guarding the house very seriously. I'm seeing some reactive, fear aggression in walks around the neighborhood and am in the process of developing a behavior program for him. Have bought quite a few books from the Dogwise website including the new one by Pat Miller titled "Do Over Dogs" which has information for people who are starting with adult dogs.

Monty has been going to doggy daycare about 1 time a week and plays the whole day long. Most mornings we go for an hour long run in the high desert before work and one of us comes home at lunch to let them out. We are thinking of installing a doggy door. We did not realize how much we missed having a mastiff around the house. The sound of his snoring is comforting to us. He sounds like a little snorting piggy when he starts to sniff anything (can be mistaken for growling by some people.) Very cute. Loves cheese and will take any pill if there is cheese wrapped around it. He has grown a little taller and has filled out a bit, probably the cheese! Just can't thank you all enough for rescuing and fostering such a wonderful dog.

The Stink Bug Project

In 2010, Suz, one of our volunteers and also a dear friend of Bree & Lindsay our VP and President, fought the battle of her life against ovarian cancer. During her battle she often spoke to Bree of her rescue Great Dane, Kaya- and Kaya's innate ability and desire to want to make Suz feel better. Kaya is a silly, goofy girl but in the thick of chemo and treatments, Kaya became Suz's personal bodyguard...even growling at caregivers when they approached at med time.

During a recent lunch, Suz told Bree about The Stink Bug Project (www.stinkbugproject.org). The Stink Bug Project was created by 9 year old Allison and her family after Allison fought her own brave battle with cancer and realized what a great gift their dog Coco had been during the hard times. Allison wants other children to know the love of a dog during illness. So with that dream, The Stink Bug Project was born. To accomplish this goal, they sell homemade dog cookies.

Business is booming for this great organization and they need help baking on the weekends. Bree sent out a call for help and many BDHPI volunteers along with friends from the dog community showed up and helped!

So, we spent a few hours today mixing, rolling, cutting and baking dog cookies. We got to spend time with Allison and her Mom. Shannon from Rocky Mountain Mastiff Fanciers even brought an 11 week old OEM for us to play with!

We had such a great time today and plan to return soon.

RIP Taneal

We said goodbye to one of our own yesterday, Taneal the Great Dane who had recently become a member of our permanent foster program.

Taneal had severe spondylosis and was rapidly losing control of her bowels. We all knew she wasn't a candidate for adoption but we also knew she had some time left with us.

During her time with BDHPI, Taneal was lucky enough to be loved by two foster families....James and Christina had Taneal for months and adored her and Mikey who had Taneal during the last month of her life.

In recent days Taneal stopped eating and cried out in pain. She also stopped interacting with Mikey and her other dogs. We sadly knew it was time to make the very difficult decision.

As Officers of BDHPI we can never thank our foster families enough for doing what they do!

Taneal spent her final days with Mikey, who as adopted 3 Mastiffs from us:

While I only had a short time with Taneal, she made a very big impact very quickly. She was very sweet and loved attention. They first night I had her I was sitting next to her and she started what I thought was growling at me. While I sat up in alarm, her growl turned into a little song with her paw reaching for me for some loving. She became quick friends with my mastiff crew and often tried to get them to play with her, even though sometimes her vocal songs would scare them at first. She loved to sneak up on the couch when I wasn’t looking and she soon realized once she made it up there, I didn’t have the heart to make her get down. She loved to go on our hikes and she would prance off and explore the world around her with such enthusiasm and would come sprinting back with this huge smile on her face. She loved being off leash and allowed to run wherever she wanted to go. She was a big fan of our snowshoe excursions and would chase Chance and Lola through the snow and bury her head in it. She was so active I thought I’d get to have her for quite a while. Unfortunately she took a quick turn for the worse and to the vet we went. I was still hoping it was something else they could fix but when he was examining her hips and she cried so loud and even growled, I knew then she was in a lot of pain and had been very brave and the time had come. I take great comfort knowing she is now running and playing with no pain. She deserves that so much!! Thanks BPHP for doing all you did for that sweet girl and I’m so thankful I was able to meet her and be a part of her life. I hope I had as much as an impact on her as she had on me.

Help Lauren and Kristy pay for Inara's ER visit

Kristy and Nolan are our awesome volunteers in Wichita and they are fostering Inara, the Borzoi puppy.

Last night, after a play session with her foster brother, Krsity noticed an open wound on Inara's inner leg. She immediately placed a call to her neighbor and fellow volunteer, Lauren, and off to the ER they went.

Inara's injury was not serious, but did cost $350 to fix this poor girl up!

While BDHPI pays for all medical costs associated with our foster dogs, Kristy and Lauren have started their own little Facebook campaign to raise funds to cover the cost of their late night ER visit. We certainly appreciate the kind gesture!!

A note from Kristy:

Okay all my dog loving friends, we had to take our foster Inara to the ER vet last night to get stitches We aren't sure how it happened but she had a laceration on her leg to the muscle. She was a very brave girl! We waited for two hours to see the vet and she did great the whole time!They did have to put her under to sew her back up and make sure she didn't need an drain tube. The ER vet did a great job! She is doing great to day! Not happy about wearing the cone but she will survive!As many of you know the ER does not come cheap. I am hoping to get some donations to help off set the cost of last nights visit. The rescue takes care of the cost but I really hope I can get some of my peeps to pitch in! Happy Birthday, Shira!

Shira (formerly Suraya) is 9 years old today! I have attached a few pictures of her new life. She lives in Capital Hill (almost downtown Denver) with her younger brother Asher the Great Dane (also BDHPI).

Shira has become so playful. When she came to us as a foster in June she was so sad and depressed after leaving her only family and her former brother. She had a few boo boos that needed to be removed and a dull coat - we figured out that she had a significant food allergy that we addressed with a low ingredient diet, and she also had arthritis which we addressed with some pain meds and really great joint supplements. You would never know that she has arthritis now…she runs around like a 4 year old at the park. We also had her pexied – and I am so glad we did, she is the “burpiest” dog we have ever had or fostered, and that is saying something.

It took Shira months to settle in and raise her ears. She was head shy and if I even spoke in a slightly elevated voice she cowered. Now she owns the house, the couch, the crate and anything else she wants. She sleeps on a double dog bed on Scott’s side of the bed next to a heater and covered with a soft blanket – all night long. She snores like a little old lady. She barks at any dog that she thinks is playing too hard with Asher! She walks all over Capital Hill every day with me and hangs out and sleeps the rest of the time. She is muscular and happy and such a joy to be with. She is particularly attached to my husband and follows him around when he is home.

Since we foster-failed with her (adopted her), we have discovered that she knows a lot of tricks. Her favorite is to stand up and hug you – we have to warn people to not stretch out their arms or she takes it as an invitation, and she is TALL….all muscle and a tall 130 pound female – still a little taller than Asher, who is 2 1/2, you can imagine! She is also very talkative, and she knows shake, sit, roll over, bang-bang and high five. Hilarious!

She is doing so well. We just love her. Adding a senior dog is such a blessing, and we will keep doing it.

Dobby Update 1

Dobby is around a 10 month old, Fawn, Mastiff mix. He was found as a stray and has been horribly neglected. We believe that he was kept in a cage too small for him that stunted his growth. As you can see in the photos, poor Dobby has severe Sarcoptic mange and he was previously barely able to walk, hunched over and his skin was hot to touch and leathery. After only 2 weeks of treatment he is a changed dog - his skin is noticeably clearer, peach fuzz is coming in on his feet and legs, and he is actually running and playing! He is a very happy dog who makes friends wherever he goes. Dobby is house trained, crate trained and is getting more and more comfortable on a leash with only a little work. He appears to be very eager to please and treat motivated so he is a fast learner. He shakes hands with both paws now and never barks or makes a fuss about anything. Dobby is a diamond in the rough and will be a very special new addition once he is healthy and ready for adoption!

There is more than one Miss America in Nebraska, come visit Big Dogs Huge Paws booth this weekend at the Lancaster Event Center, 84th & Holdrege, Lincoln NE, for the Women's Expo. We will be there Jan 22 & 23 from 10 - 5. Daizy the Big, Black & Beautiful Great Dane will be there as well as other foster dogs!

We have dog tugs and a $1 raffle for a Keurig (special edition gormet single cup home brewing system--all donations go to the dogs in our care for spays, neuters, medical costs and foster dog food). Here at BDHPI we always continued to be surprised by people's generosity. Debbie Black, of In Touch Canine Care, is one of those people.

Debbie is a Canine Massage Therapist and contacted BDHPI a few months ago offering to massage our foster dogs for free! So far she has worked on a few of our seniors- Frisco, Grand Daddy and now she can add Lily to her list.

As you can see from this picture, Lily was in heaven. She was wiggling around showing Debbie all of the spots she wanted her to work on! After Debbie left, Lily got her monkey toy and snuggled into her dog bed for a long snooze. When my husband got home from work he asked why Lilly seemed so relaxed, not knowing she had even had a massage!

Thanks Debbie for your generous offer! Lily can't wait for her next session!

We need homes...7 months in rescue is too long!

My name is Lennox. I am a 5 yr old Mastiff Mix, and have been with BDHPI since July 2010. It makes me sad that I keep getting passed over. I do have a condition that causes dry eyes, but the wonderful vets at BDHPI say I only need daily eye drops. How hard can that be? I LOVE little dogs and cats, and with proper introductions get along with the big dogs too. Won't you consider me? I will give you back my love ten fold!

My name is Clifford. I have been with BDHPI since July of 2010. I was well loved before coming into rescue and have been so sad that I keep getting passed over. I am great with other animals and do just fine with older kids too. Just 'cause I am 6 yrs old doesn't mean I can't give you my heart! I just get better with age!

Well, we are thrilled to announce that Mabel has found a home. And, not just any home... A home made just for her. A family that ONLY wanted her, and noone else. Sadly, deaf dogs that can be unpredictable with other dogs are tough to place. Usually people don't come to us looking for them. But Amanda and Eric sure did!

Amanda and Eric know Shannon, Mabel's foster mom, so Shannon was able to give them all the details and tricks of the trade to set Mabel up for success.

When we got the call that Mabel had a home, we all jumped for joy...a tear may have come to a few of our eyes!

At BDHPI we believe that there is a home for all dogs and this just proves that if you are patient, they will come!
