Update on Lovely Violet
BREE,
SO FAR EVERYTHING IS GREAT. WE TOOK HER EVERYWHERE WE WENT YESTERDAY. WHICH SEEMED TO WEAR HER OUT FROM ALL THE EXERSIZE, SO SHE SLEPT VERY WELL. SHE'S AT WORK WITH US NOW AND IS MAKING EVERYONE PET HER. SHE'S A BIG HIT, EVERYONE LOVES HER. SHE'S GETTING ALONG VERY WELL WITH GRIZZ. THERE'S A LITTLE COMPETITION FOR AFFECTION BETWEEN THEM. WE BATHED AND GROOMED HER AND GRIZZ, WE WERE ABLE TO GET A LOT OF HER UNDERCOAT OUT.
THANKS FOR SPENDING THE TIME WITH US YESTERDAY. WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU SPENDING YOUR FREE TIME HELPING NEEDY DOGS. THE WORLD COULD USE MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU.

Volunteers Needed in Topeka, KS
EVENT BASICS: Helping Hands Humane Society’s Paws in the Park 2010 will be held from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, September 18th in Gage Park. Paws in the Park is the largest annual fundraiser for HHHS. This means lots of exposure for BDHP, connecting with the local community and an opportunity to educate the public about giant breeds and rescues in general! We can also sell merchandise at our booth.
EVENT CHAIR: Lee Stevens in Topeka has offered to chair this event, but we need help with set up, tear down, talking with guests and visitors and working the booth. If you are interested in helping, it doesn't have to be for the entire event - even a few hours will help! Set up is 7-9am on the morning of the 18th, and we should plan for at least an hour after to pack up and head out (though it may not take this long).
If you're interested in helping out with this event or have general questions, please email me at Renee@BigDogsHugePaws.com (I'm going to be helping Lee plan and coordinate volunteers etc as this is her first event as a BDHP chair).
Thank you as always for your support. See you in Topeka 9-18-10!

I read this today...
While reading a success story written by a thankful owner on Wag and Train's Facebook I read a line in her story that is the epitome of what rescue is all about...and she found the perfect way to phrase it..
"We have learned that rescuing doesn't end when you sign the adoption papers. It is a process.."

Falling in love with a Newf
One of the great things about being a foster home for BDHPI is the opportunity to meet and get to know so many different breeds. In the two years I've been fostering for BDHPI, we just got our first Newf! Violet came to us last week and it did not take long for her to worm her way directly into my heart!
Here is what we have learned:
**Very smart! (Sorry Danes & Mastiffs....at least you have your looks!)
**Incredibly Agile and cuddly...and if combined, if will earn you a cuddle in the bed where there is a strict "No Foster"rule because you are just so darn cute!
**Newfs like cool surface. Tile has been her pick, but last night she found the tub, which earned her a good laugh from us humans
**Violet came to us a litle smelly and unsure of the protocol for bathing/drying I consulted with our resident Newf Expert, BDHPI Chief Admin Officer, Cindy Elkind, who explained a Newf has to be dried completely and if not, yeast infections can happen. She also did not recommend using a human hair dyer.
Armed with that information we were off to Pet Station to visit their self-wash. An hour later Brian and I were soaking wet and had black newf hair everywhere! We had two dryers going and at times had to use them on ourselves to get her hair off our face and out of our eyes! Violet was a trooper! The end result is a silky smooth coat that just calls you to pet her!
**Newfs are also great Assistants while Mom works from home.
**And when work becomes too stressful, they take up Yoga:
Violet is such a wonderful girl and if there was room in the Dew house, she would be staying for sure. I am already sad just thinking of her leaving! Whomever adopts this girl is in for a wonderful journey!

Chaya
Chaya has been in rescue since November 2009...that's 9 months too long for those of us who are counting!
She is an adorable Presa Canario. Presas are typically a dominant breed and Chaya does great with other dogs as long as she can be the boss. She adores older children too. She is known for her fabulous "wiggles" she gets when meeting new people! Her foster mom also reports she is one smart cookie!
We would love to talk more with someone about Chaya! She is anxious to find her forever home!

Dogs of the Week- Dante & Sheba
Meet Dante & Sheba, adorable 6 yr old Great Dane/Shepherd mixes. They were turned into a shelter after having a loving life with their family. These poor dogs were so scared and confused so BDHPI stepped in to save the day.
Here's the deal though...these two adore one another and we want to do everything we can to keep them together. Finding a home for two dogs at once is a extremely hard, but we know you are out there!
They are good dogs- housetrained, not destructive, very friendly. They love people of all sizes, other dogs and like to go for walks! They would be an easy addition to your family!
It will break out hearts if we have to separate them so please consider opening your heart and home to a mature pair who are just looking for a warm bed and love! Plus, the writer of this blog will cry if we can't find them a home together!
