1st Annual Kong Drive

We would love for you to support our 1st Annual Kong Drive!

It is our goal to adopt out each gentle giant with their own Kong. Kari Bastyr, our Behavior Director, recently attended a behavior seminar where they lectured that properly introducing and using a Kong with your dog can help alleviate stress, chewing and will actively stimulate the brain while us humans are away from the home.

Here are the details:

When: Friday, May 8th 5-8pm
Where: Quality Paws, 46 Broadway Denver CO
Price: $15 per Kong

Come by and visit us. There will be foster dogs, snacks and drinks.
If you are unable to attend and still want to support this event, please email Bree at . She is collecting checks for those unable to be there in person.

Gentle giants and their kids

We love to receive updates from our adopting families. Here are two pictures of recently adopted dogs, Roxy & Taneal! Looks like they've found some kids to call their own. Pictures like these make the long hours of rescue worth it.

Puppies Galore!

The Skinners arrived safe and sound around 10pm last night. It took 5 people to carry all the crates of puppies inside.
We had a great time sitting in the backyard letting the puppies roam and stretch their legs after the long car ride. Miss Dutchess also came along for the ride and is being adopted this morning!
There are still 4 of the Pyr puppies that needs homes! Get those apps in! I can assure they are well adjusted, beautiful, hilarious puppies!

BDHP Big Arrival

Claire and Trey Skinner are driving into Denver tonight from Derby, KS , and are bringing with them 8 lucky BDHP's dogs who are going to be introduced to their new forever families!

This caravan is arriving tonight at the Dew house around 10pm, so we can only imagine the chaos the arrival will bring!

This rescue is so lucky to have volunteers like The Skinners who are willing to bring such a herd to Colorado! Though, the really lucky ones are those that get to call these new babies their own!

Learning how to play

It is always sad when a young dog comes into rescue not knowing what toys are, it is even worse when they are afraid of them. This is how Turner was our house the first night. He spent the next day watching our dogs play with the toys, and quietly went over to a squeaky witch and pounced on it-it frightened him at first, but than he pounced again. From that second on, he has spent his days emptying both toy boxes into the yard. He also learned fetch yesterday. The motion of my throwing the toy frightened him at first, but now he just stays in a "sit" until I am done, than he takes off.

While posting something about playing fetch may seem silly to some, those of us who foster understand it is simple things in life that bring the greatest sense of satisfaction!

A very special relationship...

From the Vallerie Family who adopted Zeus:

When we decided to get another dog for our family, we knew it wasn't going to be an easy task. Our son, Keith, who is 3 years old has Autism. While he is the sweetest boy you will ever meet, we knew we were going to have to find a special dog. Keith is very gentle with all animals, but he pets them differently and makes high pitched noises that would frighten lots of dogs. We knew that the Saint Bernards were the breed for us. We already had one sweet girl named Hera, who was beyond perfect for our situation.

The search for our new addition led us to "Big Dogs Huge Paws". The first time we saw Zeus, we just knew that he was the one for our family, and it couldn't have worked out more perfectly. Zeus and Keith have developed an indestructible bond. They enjoy cuddling, and Zeus takes treats so gently from both Keith and our 2 year old daughter Kimberly. Zeus is always following Keith around. Keith's favorite thing to do is RUN, and oh boy is he fast! Zeus and Hera are always right with him. When we go to the lake, for hikes, or picnics they keep an eye on Keith at all times, and if he takes off so do they. Zeus alsol ets me know when Keith is upset, and will find me and take me to him. We couldn'tbe more happy with him, and everyday brings better things!
