BDHPI Loss, Remembering Cara David

It is with great sadness and shock that we write to inform you that one of our fellow Volunteers, Cara Davis, passed away on Thursday morning. Cara was traveling back to Colorado from Louisiana after celebrating the Holidays with her family when she was involved in a head on collision in Texas. Cara lost her life as well as the lives of her 2 beloved dogs.

As some of you may know, Cara was a foster for BDHPI and has been fostering Paul-O. We have been told that Cara’s parents are very worried about Paul-O and that Cara loved him very much and was proud of the dog he is. Paul-O was not with Cara at the time of the accident and has been staying with Jennifer & Fritz Piatt. The Piatt Family has graciously agreed to become Paul-O’s new foster family until his forever family is found.

A memorial fund has been set up for Cara. BDHPI will be making a donation in her honor and if you are so inclined to do so personally, here is the link: www.caradavismemorialfund.com

100% of the proceeds of this fund will be applied in the following ways: the cremation of her dogs, relocation of her cats to her parents home, bringing Cara back to Lousiana and funeral costs.

Cara was a very young 29 year old woman with a full life ahead of her and we ask that you keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Lil Bit- Why we do what we do...

BDHPI was contacted by the family of a lovely woman who was sadly battling cancer. Her time on this earth was drawing to an end but she was leaving behind her beloved Mastiffs. BDHPI gladly offered to help and welcomed Buddy & Lil Bit into rescue. Two days after bringing them into rescue, their Mama passed away. We are so thankful she left knowing her babies were being taken care.

Once in rescue, we began to observe that Lil Bit didn't feel as good as she should. Her Foster Mom immediately made an appt at the vet and we were all so sad to learn that Lil Bit too had Cancer. The vet felt she was really struggling,  in a lot of pain and suffering in a way this sweet old lady didn't deserve. With the advice of the Vet, the Officers at BDHPI made the painful (but right) decision  to peacefully end her pain.

Lil Bit left us, but joined her Mama on Tuesday afternoon. We all find peace that they are together again.

Buddy, her brother, is THRIVING in rescue.  He has a lab in his foster home and they are playing together like little wild animals. His Foster Mom says she lives in fear everyday that they are going to take down her Christmas tree :)

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of both Lil Bit and Buddy's lives.

BDHPI Masquerade Ball 2013

First, apologies to this poor blog for being neglected! We have so much to catch up on!

We've been busy, busy, busy!

Why, you ask? Because our awesome Volunteers are coordinating awesome events and the one that was captured our hearts is the BDHPI Gala. This was held this past weekend and was a Masquerade Ball! We raised almost $24,000 and had in incredible time!

If you couldn't make it this year, mark your calendars for next year. There were tables upon tables of awesome silent auction items (you should have seen the men fighting over a  very fancy Whiskey Basket). We were entertained by Dr. Fitzgerald, Comedian & Vet at Alameda East too! The Live Auction offered trips to Africa and DisneyWorld.

It was an amazing and inspiring night!

Safe with BDHPI

Our motto is every BIG dogs deserves. And these 3 dogs are not exception. Meet Dina, Bun & June- All 3 of these sweet dogs have been diagnosed with Cancer upon being brought into rescue. They are ill enough that they are not adoptable candidates but that does not mean their time is up with BDHPI! NO WAY! Their wonderful foster families have graciously offered to let these dogs live out their lives, for however long they have, as member of their families. BDHPI will happily provide any and all medical care needed to keep them comfortable!

If you would like to make donation to their care, please visit www.bigdogshugepaws.com

BDHPI loves their Senior Dogs

Senior dogs are so special, but also very  hard on a rescue's resources. The obvious is that they typically stay in rescue for months on end & need pain meds for arthritis management.  The not so obvious, that only those of us who have fostered or adopted a senior, is that they are by far the easiest and most grateful dogs on earth.

Senior dogs won't eat your couch. Senior dogs won't knock people over at the front door. Senior dogs are patient. Senior dogs only need a quick trip around the block. Senior dogs are to deeply loyal. Senior dogs are so appreciative of  warm bed to spend their final days & years.

When BDHPI was created, it was created on the basis that Senior would always be welcome. With that in mind, we wanted to share a statistic that we are so proud of.  In 2012, we brought 44 senior dogs into our rescue. While we sadly lost 5 precious souls before they could be adopted, we found forever homes for over 39 senior dogs!!!

Way to go, BDHPI!

Saying Goodbye

We had to say goodbye to 2 of our own this week…

Alibi aka Kuma the Tosa Inu has undergone all sorts of tests and further diagnostics to figure out the cause for his swollen lymph nodes and other symptoms. In the mean time, his quality of life has been gradually declining despite the best efforts of his amazing foster mom, Carroll Miller, and our vets who have done their best to keep him as comfortable as possible. He was finally diagnosed with advanced and progressive Lyphoma and due to the fact that he was terminal and suffering, we had to make the difficult decision to let him go. Carroll was with him as he crossed over the rainbow bridge and we are all grateful that he is no longer suffering and can now run and play pain free!

Kai the Great Pyrenees puppy came to us mostly deaf and blind and to make matters worse, he was very sick with what we thought was an upper respiratory infection. He was put on antibiotics but when he was not respond...ing and stopped eating and wanting to get up, his incredible foster mom, Heather Shelstad, rushed him to the emergency room. He was put on IV and Oxygen supportive care to treat advanced pneumonia for the past couple of days while we awaited his test results to try and determine the cause. This morning we were informed that Kai tested positive for Distemper which there is sadly no treatment for and the vet recommended euthanasia so we didn’t prolong his suffering. He passed peacefully and is now playing with Kuma and all the other giants who have gone before him! One of his sisters is showing signs of steady decline as well, but the other two appear to be unaffected and are eating well and thriving so we are remaining optimistic and hoping for the best! Please keep them all in your prayers!
